FIRST READING - Acts 16:11-15

"The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what Paul was saying."

A reading from the Book of the Acts of the Apostles

11 [a]We set sail from Troas, making a straight run for Samothrace, and on the next day to Neapolis, 12 and from there to Philippi, a leading city in that district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We spent some time in that city. 13 On the sabbath we went outside the city gate along the river where we thought there would be a place of prayer. We sat and spoke with the women who had gathered there. 14 One of them, a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth, from the city of Thyatira, a worshiper of God,[b] listened, and the Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what Paul was saying. 15 After she and her household had been baptized, she offered us an invitation, “If you consider me a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my home,” and she prevailed on us.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY - Jn 15:26-16:4a

"The Spirit of truth will testify to me."

From the Gospel according to John

26 “When the Advocate comes whom I will send[a] you from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me. 27 And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.

“I have told you this so that you may not fall away. They will expel you from the synagogues; in fact, the hour[b] is coming when everyone who kills you will think he is offering worship to God. They will do this because they have not known either the Father or me. I have told you this so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you.

[c] “I did not tell you this from the beginning, because I was with you.

MONDAY OF THE SIXTH WEEK OF EASTER - Gospel (John 15:26-16:4a)

THE WORD OF GOD FOR EVERYONE

Dear People of God,

Today's Word of God reveals to humanity that Jesus always loves all His disciples.

He taught and told His disciples carefully that the Father would send the Spirit of Truth to accompany and protect them.

The Spirit of Truth will come to bear witness to the truth that the words of Jesus Christ come from God the Father. And the Spirit of Truth will always be with the disciples, so that they may live and act according to what Jesus taught: to believe in Jesus Christ, who died and rose again to save humanity.

The very lives of the disciples will serve as the most authentic testimony: through a way of life marked by love, forgiveness, humility, self-abasement, and absolute faith and trust in the one God, who is the God of love.

When they live according to what Jesus taught, His disciples must go forth to bear witness to God, spreading that testimony to others to help save their souls, guiding them away the path of sin and back to God.

When the disciples proclaim and bear witness to Christ, the Holy Spirit is always with them and works through them. It is the power of the Holy Spirit that will support, shelter, and protect the disciples from the temptation and the power of Satan. For when one bears witness to God, Satan will not leave them in peace. They will seek to expel the disciples from the synagogues, persecute, manipulate, kill, and torment them, so that they may no longer spread the saving love of God to humanity.

Those who persecute the disciples are themselves being deceived by Satan, thinking they are carrying out the righteous path of God.

Today, God the Father is calling those He has chosen for His work:

  • to live according to what He has taught and go forth to bear witness to Him. He promises that He will always grant the strength and the spirit of the Holy Spirit to be with and work within those who go out to preach and bear witness to Him.

  • He also tells His children carefully in advance: “When you live according to what God teaches and go forth to bear witness to God, you will also be persecuted, condemned, and rejected, just like the apostles of old.”

He teaches and tells them carefully in advance, “so that when it happens, you may have peace; and you should rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”

  • to live in love as God loves, to bear witness to God, and to spread the saving love of God to people to save their souls; this is what God desires and calls His disciples to do.

Thanks be to God. Amen.
