“But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight.” (Lk 10:33)

FIRST READING - Jon 1:1–2:1-2, 11

“Jonah made ready to flee away from the Lord.”

A reading from the Book of Jonah

The word of the Lord came to Jonah, son of Amittai:[a] Set out for the great city[b] of Nineveh, and preach against it; for their wickedness has come before me. But Jonah made ready to flee to Tarshish,[c] away from the Lord. He went down to Joppa, found a ship going to Tarshish, paid the fare, and went down in it to go with them to Tarshish, away from the Lord.

The Lord, however, hurled a great wind upon the sea, and the storm was so great that the ship was about to break up. Then the sailors were afraid and each one cried to his god. To lighten the ship for themselves, they threw its cargo into the sea. Meanwhile, Jonah had gone down into the hold of the ship, and lay there fast asleep. The captain approached him and said, “What are you doing asleep? Get up, call on your god! Perhaps this god will be mindful of us so that we will not perish.”

Then they said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots to discover on whose account this evil has come to us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. They said to him, “Tell us why this evil has come to us! What is your business? Where do you come from? What is your country, and to what people do you belong?” “I am a Hebrew,” he replied; “I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”

10 Now the men were seized with great fear and said to him, “How could you do such a thing!”—They knew that he was fleeing from the Lord, because he had told them. 11 They asked, “What shall we do with you, that the sea may calm down for us?” For the sea was growing more and more stormy. 12 Jonah responded, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea and then the sea will calm down for you. For I know that this great storm has come upon you because of me.”

13 Still the men rowed hard to return to dry land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy. 14 Then they cried to the Lord: “Please, O Lord, do not let us perish for taking this man’s life; do not charge us with shedding innocent blood, for you, Lord, have accomplished what you desired.”[d] 15 Then they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea stopped raging. 16 Seized with great fear of the Lord, the men offered sacrifice to the Lord and made vows.

But the Lord sent a great fish to swallow Jonah, and he remained in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. 11 Then the Lord commanded the fish to vomit Jonah upon dry land.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY - Lk 10:25-37

“And who is my neighbor?”

From the Gospel according to Luke

25 [a]There was a scholar of the law[b] who stood up to test him and said, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 Jesus said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read it?” 27 He said in reply, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 He replied to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.”

29 But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Jesus replied, “A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead. 31 [c]A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. 32 Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. 33 But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight. 34 He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn and cared for him. 35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, ‘Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.’ 36 Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?” 37 He answered, “The one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

27TH MONDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - Gospel (Luke 10:25-37)

THE WORD OF GOD FOR EVERYONE

Dear people of God,

The Word of God in today's Gospel, God teaches humanity the way to live the commandment of love in order to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

Jesus Christ is the God of love; He came down to earth to become human and to live out the word of love. He not only preached, speaking words of love with His lips, but He also always practiced living out love, which was revealed to humanity in daily life.

He is truly the love of God the Father bestowed upon humanity; therefore, whoever comes to the God of love comes to light, truth, and life.

Whoever loves God and desires to obtain eternal life must be determined and persevere in living according to His teachings, which is to live the commandment of love.

Today's Word of God recounts the dialogue between Jesus and a scholar of the law. The scholar was knowledgeable and understood all the commandments of love, which are the laws that lead humanity to eternal life.

The scholar knew the law well but was arrogant and did not live by the law of love. So will his soul attain the eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven?

Therefore, today's Word of God wishes to instruct the scholar of the law, as well as everyone that to obtain eternal life, we must practice living the commandment of love, which is to love God above all things, to love our neighbors as ourselves, and to love all of our brothers and sisters; that is what we need to practice while living on this earth.

He does not want humanity to fall into Satan's traps, which are: arrogance, self-satisfaction, complacency, believing oneself to understand the commandments clearly, but failing to practice living out love, for that does not please God.

Therefore, He advises the scholar of the law as well as everyone today that:

  • We must be determined to practice living out love; if we live this way, the Kingdom of Heaven will reign in our hearts.

  • Love everyone, without distinction or exclusion of anyone, for all of our brothers and sisters are neighbors, just as in the parable of the Good Samaritan.

  • Do not live in hypocrisy, do not live with an outward appearance of morality and holiness, yet inwardly are full of wickedness and sin, full of selfishness, pride, and arrogance.

Today, God calls everyone to live and put into practice the commandment of love that God bestows upon humanity, so that through a life of love, humanity will be granted by God to attain eternal life in His Father's Kingdom.

Thanks be to God. Amen.
