FIRST READING - Acts 14:19-28

"They called the church together and reported what God had done with them."

A reading from the Book of the Acts of the Apostles

19 However, some Jews from Antioch and Iconium arrived and won over the crowds. They stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead. 20 But when the disciples gathered around him, he got up and entered the city. On the following day he left with Barnabas for Derbe.

21 After they had proclaimed the good news to that city and made a considerable number of disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch. 22 They strengthened the spirits of the disciples and exhorted them to persevere in the faith, saying, “It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God.” 23 They appointed presbyters[a] for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, commended them to the Lord in whom they had put their faith. 24 Then they traveled through Pisidia and reached Pamphylia. 25 After proclaiming the word at Perga they went down to Attalia. 26 From there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work they had now accomplished. 27 And when they arrived, they called the church together and reported what God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles. 28 Then they spent no little time with the disciples.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY - Jn 14:27-31a

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you."

From the Gospel according to John

27 Peace[a] I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. 28 [b]You heard me tell you, ‘I am going away and I will come back to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father; for the Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you this before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe. 30 I will no longer speak much with you, for the ruler of the world[c] is coming. He has no power over me, 31 but the world must know that I love the Father and that I do just as the Father has commanded me. Get up, let us go.

TUESDAY OF THE FIFTH WEEK OF EASTER - Gospel (John 14:27-31a)

THE WORD OF GOD FOR EVERYONE

Dear People of God,

Before Jesus Christ went to Jerusalem to suffer and die, He comforted His disciples, saying: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.

Remain in my peace.

Do not be troubled. Believe in God and believe in me.”

Jesus always loves His disciples.

He always accompanies, guides, and directs His disciples to walk on the path of light, truth, and reality to fight against Satan.

He knew that after He returned to God the Father, Satan would continue to harass His disciples by using those around them to cause division, to oppose them, and to undermine their faith in their Divine Master.

And Satan also stirs up all kinds of storms when the disciples go out to preach the Word of God, preaching about a Jesus Christ who was crucified and rose again to save humanity.

Therefore, Jesus instructed His disciples:

“Be at peace in the love of God. Do not be afraid! Do not be troubled!”. The peace that God gives is not like the peace of the world. The peace that God grants is this: having God within oneself.

-Trust in God, for He has absolute power, and He can do all things. He will shelter and protect people from great storms and waves. He will grant the grace of courage to help His disciples embrace their trials.

-God always loves all people and invites them to seek Him, for to have God is to have peace.

-Trust and entrust everything to God. He will reach out to help when people encounter suffering and difficulties caused by the world.

When He grants peace to people, it does not mean that they will not have to suffer. That is not the case!

When He grants peace and adds strength, it means having God in one's heart to help one fight against difficulties, hardships, and trials, just as Jesus Christ, through the power and strength of God the Father and His obedience to God the Father, overcame Satan.

Now, His children must also obey God the Father and remain in His love, and they too will have the strength of God to help them fight and to help them accept the suffering brought by the world.

By doing what God teaches, one will have peace in the love of God the Father.

Thanks be to God. Amen.
