“You will go before the Lord to prepare his ways.” (Lk 1:76)

FIRST READING - 2 Sm 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16

"Your house and your kingdom are firm forever before me."

A reading from the Second Book of Samuel

After the king had taken up residence in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from his enemies on every side, the king said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent!” Nathan answered the king, “Whatever is in your heart, go and do, for the Lord is with you.” But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: Go and tell David my servant, Thus says the Lord: Is it you who would build me a house to dwell in? Now then, speak thus to my servant David, Thus says the Lord of hosts:[a] I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to become ruler over my people Israel. I was with you wherever you went, and I cut down all your enemies before you. And I will make your name like that of the greatest on earth. 10 I will assign a place for my people Israel and I will plant them in it to dwell there; they will never again be disturbed, nor shall the wicked ever again oppress them, as they did at the beginning, 11 and from the day when I appointed judges over my people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord also declares to you that the Lord will make a house for you: 12 when your days have been completed and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring after you, sprung from your loins, and I will establish his kingdom. 14 I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. If he does wrong, I will reprove him with a human rod and with human punishments; 16 Your house and your kingdom are firm forever before me; your throne shall be firmly established forever.[a]

GOSPEL OF THE DAY - Lk 1:67-79

"The tender mercy of our Godby which the daybreak from on high will visit us."

From the Gospel according to Luke

67 Then Zechariah his father, filled with the holy Spirit, prophesied, saying:

68 [a]“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,

for he has visited and brought redemption to his people.

69 [b]He has raised up a horn for our salvation

within the house of David his servant,

70 even as he promised through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old:

71 salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us,

72 to show mercy to our fathers

and to be mindful of his holy covenant

73 and of the oath he swore to Abraham our father,

and to grant us that,

74 rescued from the hand of enemies,

without fear we might worship him

75 in holiness and righteousness

before him all our days.

76 And you, child, will be called prophet of the Most High,

for you will go before the Lord[c] to prepare his ways,

77 to give his people knowledge of salvation

through the forgiveness of their sins,

78 because of the tender mercy of our God

by which the daybreak from on high[d] will visit us

79 to shine on those who sit in darkness and death’s shadow,

to guide our feet into the path of peace.”

4th WEDNESDAY OF ADVENT - Mass in the Morning - Gospel (Luke 1:67-79)

Dear people of God,

Today's Word of God speaks of Zechariah prophesying about the Most High Son of God.

The Most High Son of God came into the world to become human precisely because of the love He bestowed upon humanity, and this promise was fulfilled when God gave up everything to come to earth and become man, allowing humanity to behold the presence of God.

The image of the Son of God coming into the world to become man is manifested as the image of God the Father, the Invisible One.

God, the Most High God, who gave up everything to take on the human condition, so that humanity can find happiness in God the Father’s love.

God informs humanity that the Son of God came to earth to become a human being to save people from the captivity of Satan, and from the suffering and darkness weighing heavily upon their souls and bodies.

For out of this great love, He disregarded glory and honor, so that He could accompany humanity in all places and at all times; especially those who are sinful, weak, and lowly, He always invites these people to run to God to be guided by His light and love.

God informs humanity that the words Zechariah prophesied about the Most High God coming into the world to become human have now been fulfilled, that is, the Son of God has come to earth to sacrifice Himself and die, saving human souls.

God is among us, humanity, but many people have not recognized the Son of God as the God of love; many have abandoned God and do not believe in Him.

Today, God wishes to call upon all humanity to run to the God of love.

Zechariah's prophecies are true; it was the Holy Spirit who enlightened and guided him so that he could offer words of blessing and praise, glorify God, and also show humanity the power and strength of God, as manifested in Zechariah, when the Annunciation Angel brought the word of God to him.

In his joy, delight, and gladness, for God's promise had been fulfilled that his family had a child; it was that joy that led him to raise his voice in blessing, praise, and glorification of God.

In today’s world, many people are filled with God's grace, so He calls everyone to offer words of blessing, thanksgiving, praise, and glorification to God, just as Zechariah did.

Words of praise and glorification to God will bring joy and happiness to ourselves and will please God the Father more.

God the Father desires humanity to be vigilant and enter the path of God's light of salvation.

This very path of light and salvation has been carried out for over two thousand years, that is, the Son of God coming into the world as a human being.

God calls upon all humanity to prepare and open our hearts to welcome the Son of God coming into the world as a human being, and also prepare to bring our whole heart to sing praises to God, and to await the day of God's coming.

God desires today’s humanity to rejoice, to joyfully sing, to wait for the Son of God coming into the world as a human being in the coming moments to cleanse our souls to be truly pure and clean, to welcome the Son of God to dwell in our souls and bodies through the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.

Thanks be to God. Amen.
