“We are unprofitable servants, we have done what we were obliged to do.” (Lk 17:10)

FIRST READING - Wis 2:23-3:9

"They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead; but they are in peace."

A reading from the Book of Wisdom

23 For God formed us to be imperishable;

the image of his own nature he made us.

24 But by the envy[a] of the devil, death entered the world,

and they who are allied with him experience it.

The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God,

and no torment shall touch them.

They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead;

and their passing away was thought an affliction

and their going forth from us, utter destruction.

But they are in peace.

For if to others, indeed, they seem punished,

yet is their hope full of immortality;

Chastised a little, they shall be greatly blessed,

because God tried them

and found them worthy of himself.

As gold in the furnace, he proved them,

and as sacrificial offerings[d] he took them to himself.

In the time of their judgment[e] they shall shine

and dart about as sparks through stubble;

They shall judge nations and rule over peoples,

and the Lord shall be their King forever.

Those who trust in him shall understand truth,

and the faithful shall abide with him in love:

Because grace and mercy are with his holy ones,

and his care is with the elect.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY - Lk 17:7-10

"We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do."

From the Gospel according to Luke

“Who among you would say to your servant who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here immediately and take your place at table’? Would he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat. Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink. You may eat and drink when I am finished’? Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded? 10 So should it be with you. When you have done all you have been commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.’”

32ND TUESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - Gospel (Luke 17:7-10)

THE WORD OF GOD FOR EVERYONE

Dear People of God,

Today’s Word of God teaches us to remain watchful in our thoughts, words, and deeds in our daily life.

We are called to recognize our status as servants—that is, sinners who are loved, shown mercy, and protected by God. God teaches us to know who we are before Him, so that we do not fall into the trap of Satan, which is pride.

He wants us to look at the example of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, in order to learn modesty and humility before Him.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus uses the parable of a servant serving his master. When the servant finishes his work, he simply says: “I am an unprofitable servants; have done what I am obliged to do.” Through this, God teaches His children that to avoid the snares of Satan, we must recognize we are servants, and that God is our only Master.

When we have fulfilled our duties as servants of God, we will receive eternal happiness in the Kingdom of Heaven. God desires His children to live in modesty, humility, simplicity, and littleness and to strive to fulfill the duties He has entrusted to us—to do well whatever God has commanded us.

Then, when He calls us out of this world, the soul of the servant will have eternal joy in the Kingdom of Heaven. This is the reward for the servant who fulfills his duties, entrusted by God the Father, in this earthly life.

Whoever is wise and eager for eternal happiness should walk the path God teaches: to live in obedience, to fear and honor God above all things, and to follow what He commands.

Thanks be to God.
