“You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?” (Lk 12:20)

FIRST READING - Rom 4:20-25

"It was written that it was also for us to whom it will be credited, who believe in the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead."

A reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans

20 He did not doubt God’s promise in unbelief;[a] rather, he was empowered by faith and gave glory to God 21 and was fully convinced that what he had promised he was also able to do. 22 That is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.” 23 But it was not for him alone that it was written that “it was credited to him”; 24 it was also for us, to whom it will be credited, who believe in the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 who was handed over for our transgressions and was raised for our justification.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY - Lk 12:13-21

"The things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?"

From the Gospel according to Luke

13 [a]Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.” 14 He replied to him, “Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?” 15 Then he said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.”

16 Then he told them a parable. “There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. 17 He asked himself, ‘What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?’ 18 And he said, ‘This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods 19 and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!”’ 20 But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’ 21 Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God.”[b]

29TH MONDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - Gospel (Luke 12:13-21)

THE WORD OF GOD FOR EVERYONE

Dear people of God,

In today’s Word of God, Jesus speaks about the parable of the rich man who only cared about accumulating wealth for himself on earth. He uses this parable to help everyone discern, so that they can make a right and wise choice between accumulating treasures for the Kingdom of Heaven and accumulating worldly treasures. Which one is most important for each person's spiritual life?

Jesus came down to earth to teach and help humanity attain eternal happy life in the everlasting Kingdom of Heaven hereafter.

Therefore, in today's Gospel, when the young man asked the Jesus to arbitrate the division of inheritance between the two brothers, Jesus replied that He did not come to arbitrate worldly inheritances, but He came to save humanity from the captivity of Satan and from the desire for material wealth of this world.

After that, He told the parable of the rich man who was concerned only with storing of many material wealth to secure his life. In his thinking: "Now I have an excess of material wealth, so I will just rest, eat, drink, and enjoy the pleasures of this world to the fullest!" And he was foolish. Jesus' words to the rich man are also a warning to those who are only concerned with storing up material wealth for enjoyment in this life:

Jesus said to him: “You fool! This very night your life will be demanded of you. Then to whom will those possessions belong?"

God is the God of love; He desires to call and guide humanity towards eternal life hereafter, which is spiritual life in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Therefore, today, God call on everyone to:

  • Aim for the eternal life of the Kingdom of Heaven hereafter; do not remain focused on earthly material life; never place this worldly life above all else, nor make it the entire purpose of our life. Because doing so will make one a fool in the sight of God. For only the God of love is the most precious treasure that everyone must seek.

  • We must accumulate treasures for the eternal Kingdom of Heaven hereafter, right here on earth, by always knowing how to love and share with others, always having altruism and charity, knowing how to live in harmony, and supporting one another.

God is the Wise One; He knows what is good and what is bad for humanity. Therefore, He calls on humanity to fulfill the duties He bestows, to fulfill the 'Law of Love', to love God above all things and to love our neighbors as ourselves.

Thanks be to God. Amen.
