“'You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?'” (Mt 5:13)

FIRST READING - 1:18-22

A reading from the Second Letter to the Corinthians

Brothers and sisters:

As God is faithful, our word to you is not "yes" and "no."

For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was proclaimed to you by us,

Silvanus and Timothy and me,

was not "yes" and "no," but "yes" has been in him.

For however many are the promises of God, their Yes is in him;

therefore, the Amen from us also goes through him to God for glory.

But the one who gives us security with you in Christ

and who anointed us is God;

he has also put his seal upon us

and given the Spirit in our hearts as a first installment.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY - 5:13-16

From the Gospel according to Matthew

Jesus said to his disciples:

"You are the salt of the earth.

But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?

It is no longer good for anything

but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

You are the light of the world.

A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.

Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket;

it is set on a lampstand,

where it gives light to all in the house.

Just so, your light must shine before others,

that they may see your good deeds

and glorify your heavenly Father."

TUESDAY OF THE TENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME - Gospel (Mt 5:13-16)

THE WORD OF GOD FOR EVERYONE

Dear People of God,

Today’s Word of God teaches that God the Father calls His disciples to follow Him by bearing witness through their lives. They are to become like salt and light in the world. The nature of salt and light is to bring benefit to others—to lead people along the right path that God the Father calls them to follow.

God the Father desires His disciples to be salt and light for the world. This means that, in their daily lives, they must live according to His commands: love, loyalty, and obedience to His will. Love becomes the salt, the yeast—it nourishes suffering souls, warms those made cold by the world, and heals the wounds of those suffering greatly under the oppression of Satan.

God the Father teaches that only His light, only His Word, only His love can bind up and heal the wounds in the souls of those He provides for and protects. This is the sacred work in which He allows His apostles to participate: the work of salvation.

Therefore, God the Father calls His apostles to go forth joyfully and bear witness to Him. They are to be salt, yeast, and light—to bring the love of God the Father to others; to bring His Word as a guiding light so that humanity may walk in that light and reach His love. God the Father does not desire a single soul to be lost to Satan.

In today’s Word, God the Father invites His apostles to go out joyfully and live as true salt, yeast, and light for the world—to help their brothers and sisters escape from Satan’s captivity. But to do this, the disciples themselves must live true to their identity as apostles. They must live and reflect God the Father’s love in their relationships with others.

They must not set a blind or harmful example. They must not exhibit the works of Satan in their actions toward others. That is: do not be selfish, do not be proud, do not boast, do not be arrogant, and do not glorify yourself.

Instead, live simply, humbly, lovingly, sacrificially—caring for your brothers and sisters with all your heart. In doing so, Satan will be defeated, and God the Father will be glorified here on earth.

Thanks be to God. Amen
