FIRST READING - Gen 17:3-9
"I am making you the father of a multitude of nations."
A reading from the Book of Genesis
3 Abram fell face down and God said to him: 4 For my part, here is my covenant with you: you are to become the father of a multitude of nations. 5 No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham,[a] for I am making you the father of a multitude of nations. 6 I will make you exceedingly fertile; I will make nations of you; kings will stem from you. 7 I will maintain my covenant between me and you and your descendants after you throughout the ages as an everlasting covenant, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. 8 I will give to you and to your descendants after you the land in which you are now residing as aliens, the whole land of Canaan, as a permanent possession; and I will be their God. 9 God said to Abraham: For your part, you and your descendants after you must keep my covenant throughout the ages.
GOSPEL OF THE DAY - Jn 8:51-59
"Abraham your father rejoiced to see my day."
✠From the Gospel according to John
51 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever keeps my word will never see death.” 52 [So] the Jews said to him, “Now we are sure that you are possessed. Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘Whoever keeps my word will never taste death.’ 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham,[a] who died? Or the prophets, who died? Who do you make yourself out to be?” 54 Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is worth nothing; but it is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ 55 You do not know him, but I know him. And if I should say that I do not know him, I would be like you a liar. But I do know him and I keep his word. 56 Abraham your father rejoiced to see my day; he saw it[b] and was glad. 57 So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old and you have seen Abraham?”[c] 58 [d]Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM.” 59 So they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid and went out of the temple area.

5th THURSDAY OF LENT - Gospel (John 8:51-59)
THE WORD OF GOD FOR EVERYONE
Dear people of God,
Today’s Word of God teaches humanity that whoever believes and keeps the Word of Jesus Christ will never die.
The Word of Jesus teaches humanity to progress ever deeper into the eternal life to come.
He reveals that the eternal life of a person will never die. And He reveals to humanity His own identity and life, which originated from God the Father.
He is the Eternal One who has existed from the beginning, from all eternity.
He continues to reveal to humanity His existence. He existed before the forefather Abraham was born.
But with limited understanding, and the pride of mortal man, they did not recognize the word of Jesus Christ as the word of truth.
This word of truth has also been revealed in the Scriptures, which the Jews studied, and they themselves proclaimed that they believed in and worshipped only one God, their Father.
Jesus pointed out their weak and sinful nature.
Jesus showed them that when they proclaim they worship only one God, they must surely believe in the words of Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Trinity who came down to earth to become man, and they must believe that for those who believe in God, the life of their soul, which God created, will never die.
Today, it is precisely because humanity has lost faith in the life to come that they have fallen into despair, seeking death under the delusion that death is the end.
They are mistaken and are walking the wrong path.
Consequently, many have entered the path of sin, and countless souls have fallen into the hands of Satan because they lack faith in the eternal God and no longer believe in the immortal soul or the life hereafter.
God invites those who are erroneously thinking and walking along that mistaken path to turn back, believe in Him, and believe that human beings are composed of both soul and body, and that the soul, created by God, is forever immortal.
Thanks be to God. Amen.
