“Lord, please let me see.” (Lk 18:41)

FIRST READING - 1 Macc 1:10-15, 41-43, 54-57, 62-63

"They preferred to die rather than to be defiled with food or to profane the holy covenant."

A reading from the First Book of Maccabees

10 There sprang from these a sinful offshoot, Antiochus Epiphanes, son of King Antiochus, once a hostage at Rome. He became king in the one hundred and thirty-seventh year[a] of the kingdom of the Greeks.

11 In those days there appeared in Israel transgressors of the law who seduced many, saying: “Let us go and make a covenant with the Gentiles all around us; since we separated from them, many evils have come upon us.” 12 The proposal was agreeable; 13 some from among the people promptly went to the king, and he authorized them to introduce the ordinances of the Gentiles. 14 Thereupon they built a gymnasium[b] in Jerusalem according to the Gentile custom. 15 They disguised their circumcision and abandoned the holy covenant; they allied themselves with the Gentiles and sold themselves to wrongdoing. 41 Then the king wrote to his whole kingdom that all should be one people, 42 and abandon their particular customs. All the Gentiles conformed to the command of the king, 43 and many Israelites delighted in his religion; they sacrificed to idols and profaned the sabbath. 54 On the fifteenth day of the month Kislev, in the year one hundred and forty-five,[a] the king erected the desolating abomination upon the altar of burnt offerings, and in the surrounding cities of Judah they built pagan altars. 55 They also burned incense at the doors of houses and in the streets. 56 Any scrolls of the law[b] that they found they tore up and burned. 57 Whoever was found with a scroll of the covenant, and whoever observed the law, was condemned to death by royal decree. 62 But many in Israel were determined and resolved in their hearts not to eat anything unclean; 63 they preferred to die rather than to be defiled with food or to profane the holy covenant; and they did die.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY - Lk 18:35-43

"What do you want me to do for you? - Lord, please let me see."

From the Gospel according to Luke

35 Now as he approached Jericho a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging, 36 and hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what was happening. 37 They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” 38 He shouted, “Jesus, Son of David,[a] have pity on me!” 39 The people walking in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent, but he kept calling out all the more, “Son of David, have pity on me!” 40 Then Jesus stopped and ordered that he be brought to him; and when he came near, Jesus asked him, 41 “What do you want me to do for you?” He replied, “Lord, please let me see.” 42 Jesus told him, “Have sight; your faith has saved you.” 43 He immediately received his sight and followed him, giving glory to God. When they saw this, all the people gave praise to God.

33RD MONDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - Gospel (Luke 18:35-43)

THE WORD OF GOD FOR EVERYONE

Dear people of God,

The Word of God in today's Gospel tells the story of Jesus healing a man who had been blind since birth.

God is love; He clearly sees the blind man's desire to see; therefore, He has mercy and answered his prayer.

When the blind man heard that Jesus Christ was passing by, he sought every way to meet Him and ask Jesus for healing, even though the crowd was preventing him from meeting Jesus. This blind man could not see with his physical eyes, but he saw with the eyes of faith.

God is the Almighty; He clearly sees everything within humanity; He saw the blind man's desire to see God when he cried out: “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me!” That earnest prayer was heard and answered by God. He ordered that the blind man be brought to Him and said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man expressed his deep desire: “Lord, let me see!” The Lord has shown compassion and healed him!

After the blind man received his sight, he resolved to abandon everything and follow Him, which is the path leading to eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Today, God also instructs and invites everyone to come to Him and pray for Him to open the eyes of our faith:

  • So that we may see the eternal life of the Kingdom of Heaven hereafter;

  • So that we may see the way to the Kingdom of Heaven;

  • So that God may answer our prayers and guide us to walk the path toward the eternal life of the Kingdom of Heaven hereafter;

  • So that we may not fall into the snares of Satan, nor stray from the path that God has given and instructed us to follow.

God always loves humanity, and God calls all His children to faithfully walk the path that God has instructed, which is the path of love; only the path of love that God has given and instructed humanity to follow is the way that leads humanity to the eternal happiness of the Kingdom of Heaven hereafter.

Thanks be to God. Amen.
