“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you.” (Lk 13:34)

FIRST READING - Rom 8:31b-39

"Nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus."

A reading from the Letter to the Romans

31 [a]What then shall we say to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will he not also give us everything else along with him? 33 Who will bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who acquits us. 34 Who will condemn? It is Christ [Jesus] who died, rather, was raised, who also is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. 35 What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? 36 As it is written:

“For your sake we are being slain all the day;    we are looked upon as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things,[b] nor future things, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth,[c] nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY - Lk 13:31-35

"It is impossible that a prophet should die outside of Jerusalem."

From the Gospel according to Luke

31 At that time some Pharisees came to him and said, “Go away, leave this area because Herod wants to kill you.” 32 He replied, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and I perform healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I accomplish my purpose.[a] 33 [b]Yet I must continue on my way today, tomorrow, and the following day, for it is impossible that a prophet should die outside of Jerusalem.’

34 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how many times I yearned to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were unwilling! 35 Behold, your house will be abandoned. [But] I tell you, you will not see me until [the time comes when] you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

30TH THURSDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - Gospel (Luke 13:31-35)

THE WORD OF GOD FOR EVERYONE

Dear People of God,

Today's Word of God teaches His disciples a lesson on imitating Jesus Christ in His work, His sacrifice, and His obedience to God the Father.

It was out of obedience that Jesus resolutely and fearlessly set out for Jerusalem to die and redeem humanity from their sin.

God desires to tell His disciples to fulfill the duty entrusted to them, just as Jesus once obeyed and fulfilled the duty given to Him by God the Father, which was to die in order to conquer death.

God wants to call upon humanity in today’s world to be determined to do what He commands and to fulfill the duties He has entrusted.

Look at the image of Jesus Christ, who obeyed God the Father absolutely at all times and in all places. He said, “Behold, I cast out demons and I perform healings today and tomorrow, and on the day after tomorrow I will continue my journey to Jerusalem, where I will die.”

God wants today’s humanity to also have love and compassion for others, that is, to bring His love to your brothers and sisters, to show mercy to sinners and to those held captive by Satan, and to sacrifice yourselves for the salvation of souls.

Through the image of Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection, hope for eternal life hereafter has been left for humanity.

God does not want today’s humanity to fall into the traps and temptations of Satan, which is to make people forget the image of the God who is love and rich in mercy.

He wants all humanity to recognize the God of love who is present with them. Out of love for humanity, God the Father sent His only Son to earth to become human, to accompany and be with humanity. He sacrificed Himself, embracing the sufferings and sins of humanity in His own body, and was then crucified and died on the Cross.

This very love conquered death, saved countless sinful souls, and granted humanity eternal life in the everlasting Kingdom of Heaven hereafter.

Today, God wants to call upon humanity to:

• Be vigilant against the temptations of Satan so as not to fall into their traps and lose your souls. He wants everyone to learn to unite, be united, and love one another, just as God has given His love to humanity.

• Look up to His love for the Cross, the self-sacrificing love of Jesus Christ on the cross in order to live and act according to His teachings, manifested in daily life through actions, words, and deeds among people.

Thanks be to God. Amen.
