“Ten were cleansed, were the not? Where are the other nine? Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” (Lk 17:17-18)

FIRST READING - 2 Kgs 5:14-17

"Naaman returned to the man of God, [and] no longer [made] burnt offerings or sacrifices to any other god except the Lord."

A reading from the Second Book of Kings

14 So Naaman went down and plunged into the Jordan seven times, according to the word of the man of God. His flesh became again like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.

15 He returned with his whole retinue to the man of God. On his arrival he stood before him and said, “Now I know that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel. Please accept a gift from your servant.” 16 Elisha replied, “As the Lord lives whom I serve, I will not take it.” And despite Naaman’s urging, he still refused. 17 Naaman said: “If you will not accept, please let me, your servant, have two mule-loads of earth,[a] for your servant will no longer make burnt offerings or sacrifices to any other god except the Lord.

SECOND READING - 2 Tim 2:8-13

"If we persevere, we shall also reign with him."

A reading from the Second Letter to Timothy

[a]Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David: such is my gospel, for which I am suffering, even to the point of chains, like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. 10 Therefore, I bear with everything for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, together with eternal glory. 11 This saying is trustworthy:

If we have died with him

we shall also live with him;

12 if we persevere

we shall also reign with him.

But if we deny him

he will deny us.

13 If we are unfaithful

he remains faithful,

for he cannot deny himself.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY - Lk 17:11-19

"Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?"

From the Gospel according to Luke

11 As he continued his journey to Jerusalem, he traveled through Samaria and Galilee.[a] 12 As he was entering a village, ten lepers met [him]. They stood at a distance from him 13 and raised their voice, saying, “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!” 14 And when he saw them, he said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.”[b] As they were going they were cleansed. 15 And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; 16 and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan. 17 Jesus said in reply, “Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? 18 Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” 19 Then he said to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.”

28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR C - Gospel (Luke 17:11-19)

THE WORD OF GOD FOR EVERYONE

Dear people of God,

Today's Word of God teaches humanity a lesson: we must be grateful to God and  have a close connection with Him in life.

God wants humanity to know that only God is the One who loves humanity most in this entire universe. Looking at human society from ancient times to the present, it is shown that love among people has been interfered with by Satan. They tempt humanity, causing discord, division, hatred, jealousy, and mutual exclusion - especially when people lack compassion for the sick, disabled, and destitute in society.

The word of God in today's Gospel recounts the story of Jesus healing ten people afflicted with leprosy. They were the people who were rejected by society, shunned by people, and no one had mercy on them even though they also desired to be loved like everyone else. God reveals that all people in this world are sinners before God, and that all are pitiful people who need His mercy.

Therefore, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to earth to save and heal all human illnesses and disabilities, leading humanity to God the Father. Through the image of the ten lepers healed by Jesus, God reveals that he saw their hearts yearning for God's love, yearning to be healed by God; because they were abandoned and shunned by everyone, they could only rely on God's loving heart. It was God's love and mercy that prompted them to run and cry out to Him: “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” Through that plea, God clearly saw their absolute trust in Him, so He healed them.

In the first reading, the Book of Kings tells a story that in ancient times, Naaman (NEIGH-MAN), a general of the king of Aram (AH-RUM), suffered from leprosy. He believed the words of Elisha (E-LIE-SHA), a prophet of God, and went to immerse himself seven times in the Jordan River, and he was healed. After he was healed, he was grateful to the man of God, and he thanked and praised God, wanting to worship Him alone, for he had recognized God's love for him.

Today's Word of God states that the Lord will heal the ten lepers when they have faith in Him. He tested their faith by telling them to go and present themselves to the priests; and they believed that the Lord had healed them, so they went to present themselves. While they were going, they were healed by God, but only the Samaritan returned to give thanks to God.

Through the image of the Samaritan who is grateful to God, God wishes to teach humanity:

- to always give thanks to God in all circumstances;

- to give thanks to God for allowing you to be born and live in this world, for allowing you to be a child of God; that is the immense love God bestows upon humanity, lowly creatures who are made children of God.

- When anyone has absolute trust and faith in God as the Samaritan does, which is pleasing to Him, they will be loved by God, healed by God, and rewarded with the happiness of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Today's Word of God invites everyone to always have mercy on others, to have gratitude and to give thanks to God in all circumstances. And we must live the word of thanksgiving with absolute trust in God's love and mercy, knowing how to worship, respect, obey and serve Him in all places and at all times.

With Today's Word of God, Saint Paul invites everyone to die with Jesus Christ so that they may also live again with Him, which is to live according to the path of love and mercy that God invites everyone to live today.

We must always listen to and practice God's teachings, which is to live out the word “love”.

Thanks be to God. Amen.
