"Jesus departed to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer to God." (Lk 6:12)

FIRST READING - Col 2:6-15

"He brought you to life along with Christ, having forgiven us all our transgressions."

A reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Colossians

So, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in him, rooted in him and built upon him and established in the faith as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. See to it that no one captivate you with an empty, seductive philosophy according to human tradition, according to the elemental powers of the world[a] and not according to Christ.

For in him dwells the whole fullness of the deity[b] bodily, 10 and you share in this fullness in him, who is the head of every principality and power. 11 In him[c] you were also circumcised with a circumcision not administered by hand, by stripping off the carnal body, with the circumcision of Christ. 12 You were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 And even when you were dead [in] transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, he brought you to life along with him, having forgiven us all our transgressions; 14 [d]obliterating the bond against us, with its legal claims, which was opposed to us, he also removed it from our midst, nailing it to the cross; 15 despoiling the principalities and the powers, he made a public spectacle of them, leading them away in triumph by it.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY - Lk 6:12-19

"He spent the night in prayer to God. When day came, he called his disciples to himself, and from them he chose Twelve."

From the Gospel according to Luke

12 In those days he departed to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer[a] to God. 13 When day came, he called his disciples to himself, and from them he chose Twelve,[b] whom he also named apostles: 14 Simon, whom he named Peter,[c] and his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15 Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called a Zealot,[d] 16 and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot,[e] who became a traitor.

17 [f]And he came down with them and stood on a stretch of level ground. A great crowd of his disciples and a large number of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon 18 came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and even those who were tormented by unclean spirits were cured. 19 Everyone in the crowd sought to touch him because power came forth from him and healed them all.

23RD TUESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - Gospel (Lc 6: 12-19)

THE WORD OF GOD FOR EVERYONE

Dear People of God,

The Word of God in today’s Gospel recounts two events:

First: Jesus spent the whole night in prayer with God the Father before choosing the twelve apostles, so that they might cooperate with Him in the plan of saving mankind.

Second: Jesus healed all diseases and cast out unclean spirits, demonstrating the great power of God, which has the strength to drive out Satan and heal all human illnesses.

Today, God wants to teach mankind a lesson:

When doing anything, human beings must also turn to God to ask for His help, and must always remain closely united with Him in prayer at all times and in all places, so that He may enlighten and guide one’s words and actions. For even Jesus Christ Himself, the Son of God, who came to earth and became man, had to pray unceasingly and remain united with God the Father in order to be one with Him, to listen to His Word, and to receive instructions from God the Father so that He might convey them to all mankind—so that they may know what to do and how to live according to the holy will of God the Father.

Now, God wants His apostles to always remain united and pray unceasingly to God the Father, so that He may strengthen them, so that they may listen to His Word instructing them on what must be done according to the holy will of God. For without the holy will of God guiding them and without His Spirit leading them, mankind will live superficially on the outside, will act contrary to the holy will of God, and will be exploited by Satan to interfere with and sabotage His plan of salvation.

Through the act of Jesus casting out demons and healing the sick, God also reveals that: in order to have the strength and power of God to cast out Satan and to heal the illnesses of the sick and of sinners, each person must have the following:

  • Must have the strength and power of God within that very person.

  • Must receive grace from God through unceasing prayer.

  • Must live a holy life as God calls for, in order to possess the strength and power of God that causes Satan to submit. For if anyone still lives according to the passions of the world, the devil will laugh, and it will not submit to come out of the sick and the sinners; the strength and power of prayer for healing will also not be effective.

Therefore, the Word of God today calls upon all His children, especially the leaders in the Church:

  • Must always have a life of constant and intimate union with God the Father at all times and in all places, never being apart from Him for even a moment.

-In all activities, thoughts, words, and deeds, one must always place God above all things; and must always be aware of the presence of God in one's life.

  • Be humble and self-abasement to earnestly plead for the power and strength of God to be manifested within one’s own person, so as to help oneself fulfill correctly the command of God, and from there be able to help others live a life of peace and happiness in the loving embrace of God.

Indeed, only the strength, power, and holiness of God can cast out Satan and heal all the sicknesses and infirmities of both the sick and sinners. Whoever wishes to be an instrument for God to help their brothers and sisters who are suffering from illnesses of both soul and body, should obey and follow the Words that God instructs.

Thanks be to God. Amen
