“He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.” (Mk 1:27)

FIRST READING - 1 Sm 1:9-20

"The Lord remembered her. She conceived and bore a son whom she named Samuel."

A reading from the Book of Samuel

Hannah rose after one such meal at Shiloh, and presented herself before the Lord; at the time Eli the priest was sitting on a chair near the doorpost of the Lord’s temple. 10 In her bitterness she prayed to the Lord, weeping freely, 11 and made this vow: “O Lord of hosts, if you look with pity on the hardship of your servant, if you remember me and do not forget me, if you give your handmaid a male child, I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life. No razor shall ever touch his head.”[a] 12 As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli watched her mouth, 13 for Hannah was praying silently; though her lips were moving, her voice could not be heard. Eli, thinking she was drunk, 14 said to her, “How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Sober up from your wine!” 15 “No, my lord!” Hannah answered. “I am an unhappy woman. I have had neither wine nor liquor; I was only pouring out my heart to the Lord. 16 Do not think your servant a worthless woman; my prayer has been prompted by my deep sorrow and misery.” 17 Eli said, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have requested.” 18 She replied, “Let your servant find favor in your eyes,” and left. She went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and no longer appeared downhearted. 19 Early the next morning they worshiped before the Lord, and then returned to their home in Ramah. When they returned Elkanah had intercourse with his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her.

20 She conceived and, at the end of her pregnancy, bore a son whom she named Samuel.[b] “Because I asked the Lord for him.”

GOSPEL OF THE DAY - Mk 1:21-28

"A new teaching with authority."

From the Gospel according to Mark

21 [a]Then they came to Capernaum, and on the sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught. 22 The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. 23 [b]In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit; 24 [c]he cried out, “What have you to do with us,[d] Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” 25 Jesus rebuked him and said, “Quiet! Come out of him!” 26 The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him. 27 All were amazed and asked one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.” 28 His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee.

1st TUESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - Gospel (Mark 1:21-28)

THE WORD OF GOD FOR EVERYONE

Dear People of God,

Today's Word of God lets all humanity know about a God full of authority and power.

He is the Lord of the entire universe; He can do everything in this world. Apart from Him, no one possesses power or authority like Him; His strength is infinite and boundless.

Out of love, God came and dwelled with humanity since the very beginning of the creation of this world. Furthermore, He took on human condition in Jesus Christ, coming down to earth and dwelling with humanity every moment, giving His Word directly to mankind.

His teaching possesses power and authority beyond comparison with anyone on earth. Everything is manifested through the Word He speaks and specifically through His very actions, which is the expression of sublime, boundless love that surpasses all. That love left a deep impression on the human heart, expressed in the admiration and acclamation of God’s people: “His teaching is new, and the teacher has authority.”

It is the love for all humanity that enabled Him to conquer death, to conquer the captivity of Satan when they raged over the souls and bodies of humans and other created beings.

He alone is the only One whom all creation must come to worship and glorify. Only He alone.

God makes it known to all humanity that no matter how Satan may rage in this world or how many souls it may try to snatch from God’s hand, it remains under God’s power and must submit to His holy name.

God lets all humanity know that God alone has authority over Satan. Therefore, the Word of God recounts the event in the Temple today, where, when the Word of God was spoken, Satan must submit and prostrate itself to worship Him. God reveals that in the world today, Satan is causing many people to fall deeply into their temptations.

God the Father invites all humanity to run to the almighty God; He will drive out Satan, casting evil far away from the souls and bodies of people; and He will heal all sickness and infirmity for all those who come to call upon God's holy name.

Especially in the age of the Holy Spirit, God the Father uses ordinary, simple people who know how to humbly obey God as instruments to cooperate in His plan of salvation, helping to drive Satan out of the souls and bodies of mankind.

God desires all humanity to be courageous, to abandon the sinful lifestyle of Satan, and to return to God the Father of love.

This love is being manifested in the people whom God the Father chooses, calls, and places into His plan of Sanctification.

Thanks be to God. Amen.
